This drop connects to a central location within the building known as the main distribution frame (MDF), which serves as the hub for the entire network. From this central hub, data flows out to each individual unit through category cables, providing high-speed internet access throughout the space.

In large buildings or MDUs, an intermediate distribution frame (IDF) becomes essential for extending connectivity across vast spaces. Category cables can only run so far before signal degradation occurs, so IDFs are strategically placed to extend the network's reach. 

Where indoor space is limited, IDFs can be placed outside. In these instances, the category cables from each unit are routed through a conduit to the outdoor cabinet pad housing the IDF. This setup is common in warmer regions, where exterior installations are more feasible, but in colder climates, placing the IDF indoors is generally preferred to avoid harsh weather conditions. 

Regardless of location, both indoor and outdoor IDF cabinets contain the same essential components, but outdoor installations require additional measures to ensure durability and functionality under extreme temperatures.

These IDFs act as intermediary connection points between the MDF and outlying parts of a building, ensuring consistent signal strength and speed across the entire area. This technical setup provides reliable connectivity for all users while enabling seamless transitions between access points as residents or employees move throughout the building.
